Rogerson Fitness
FIRSTSM It's a myth that older adults are fragile and cannot exercise. That's why
Rogerson Communities launched Rogerson Fitness FIRSTSM
at five sites around Greater Boston.
The program allows participants to work with an exercise
physiologist on state-of-the-art Nautilus equipment designed especially for
elders.
Exercise and Memory Loss
Research indicates numerous health benefits for elders who exercise regularly,
including increased balance, protection against the onset of certain types
of dementia, and improved cognitive functioning.
Fitness FIRST is carefully tailored to
meet the needs of elders at Rogerson House. For example, by working in
small groups and ensuring that participants’ cognitive and physical abilities
are carefully matched with others in the group, each participant can receive
the individualized attention that he or she needs. The benefits are significant,
enabling people with memory loss not only to improve their physical health
and utilize their cognitive skills, but also to interact with a broader community
of participants and staff.
